Mission Epicurious – Dinner at Cinema Verde

Mission Epicurious – Dinner at Cinema Verde

Jolie is serving up first run film cuisine

By Lynn Dirk, GLOB Content Editor

021213penneJolie, the venue and host for this year's Cinema Verde Film & Arts Festival, is serving some great food during the festival along with beer and wine. Attendees can drink and eat their meals while watching the films, which continue through this Thursday. On Water night (Monday), I had the Vodke Penne pasta, which was quite good. It came with a very large salad and a Parker House dinner roll that was fresh and perfect for scraping every last drop of the pasta sauce. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce, a creamy tomato, was rich but not too rich as some of those cream-based sauces can be. Also the pasta was topped with a good amount of parmesan. The salad ingredients were typical but very fresh and well presented. There was a house vinaigrette, which seemed to be raspberry infused, but subtly.  I always prefer house dressings - much lower odds there will be corn syrup! My companion had the chicken salad, which was essentially the same as the garden salad but with sliced grilled chicken on top. We shared each other's dinner and the grilled chicken was very good. It was sliced thin, had a distinct grilled flavor, and was tender.

I highly recommend a Jolie meal during the festival -- or after. BUT tonight (Tuesday 2/12) at CV is potluck night to complement the movie theme of the day:  food. Bring a friend and your favorite dish and get ready to enjoy some uplifting films about the good things that are happening down on the farm and on the farm Up on the Roof, "where the air is fresh and sweet." (songwriters Gerry Goffin and, one of my favorites, Carole King).  There will also be twi food demonstrations and tastings, one at 6:15 and one at 7:30, by Blue Oven Kitchens and Slow Food Gainesville.  Click here for the complete Cinema Verde schedule and here for film trailers.

Speaking of drink, the film We are Water, made by local cave diving expert, Jill Heinerth, was a crowd pleaser. Beautiful imagery with poetic meditations on water slowly transformed into a gentle but convincing scientific argument for appreciating, enjoying, and conserving this essential element of our existence and concluded with many ways to conserve water, for example: Use tap water instead of bottled water, don't run water while brushing your teeth or shaving, dispose of organic waste in a compost pile rather than using the disposal, and only run the dishwasher when it is full.  The inspiration of great movies like this can be so helpful in making those small changes that will keep Planet Earth livable as well as beautiful.
